Yet another somewhat esoteric, but totally compelling find from an emerging wine region. Refosco is traditionally an Italian grape, but in this case hails from Slovenia. Slovenia is probably best known as the birthplace of Melania Trump in all honesty. But it's nestled right between Italy, Austria, and Croatia, making it somewhat of a cultural crossroads in Europe.
The wine itself is really interesting (in a good way). There is a lot of wild brambly fruit, with black peppercorn, and some warming spice tones. Maybe like a Zinfandel but much lower in alcohol (12.5% vs. 15%+ in California).
This would be perfect with a burger or grilled chicken, but its lower alcohol content makes it suitable for most meat dishes.
You only find these things if you taste a lot. And I do.
100% Refosco.
