Beaumes-de-Venise is yet another village in Provence that was promoted to its own appellation, along with Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rastea, etc. The vineyards sit at the foot of the striking Dentelles de Montmirail (think "teeth" as the name suggests. Photo below.
I have often found the wines from Beaumes-de-Venise to be a little too ripe and licorice-y, and have usually gravitated towards the other villages in the area. However, this one is really, really great and light on its feet.
Typical Provencal notes of figs, game, red fruits, and spice.
50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. Serve cool.
