Sablet was once labeled as "Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages" but was elevated to its own appellation in 1974. Alongside Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Vacqueyras, Sablet is one of my favorite villages in the Rhone Valley.
The soils here are very sandy (sable=sand in French) and the wines are perfumed and very reflective of where they are grown. You also get a lot of that famous garrigue character that reflects the wild herbs, brush, and flowers of the region.
Domaine Piaugier is a classic and still relatively inexpensive. 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Serve cool.
