Wow. This is completely off the grid, but so completely compelling. Pfalz, like many German wine regions, is better known for Riesling. There is a small amount of Pinot Noir (they call it spatburgunder), but this is Pinot Noir's country cousin Pinot Meunier. You may know it better as the third grape allowed for the production of Champagne, alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
I tasted this yesterday with no expectations and was frankly blown away by it. This is a seriously fine wine, with the finesse and detail you would expect from Pinot Noir. Red fruits, minerals... kind of "jewel-y". I taste as often as possible just to find a wine like this.
This is like a poor man's premier cru Burgundy. 100% Pinot Meunier. Serve cool.
