Although technically a part of Spain, the Canary Islands lie just off the coast of southern Morocco, at a latitude where grape growing shouldn't be possible. But because of the high altitude of these volcanic islands, and a lot of wind, it stays cool enough to grow high quality grapes. Like the Portuguese islands of Madeira and the Azores archipelago, the Canary Islands were an important stopover for ships heading out into the Atlantic.

Native grapes like Listan Negro are grown in black volcanic soils, with stone walls built around individual vines to protect them from the wind. Please google "Canary Island vineyards" to see what I mean. As one TWC member commented, "it looks like one of those pre-loaded Microsoft backgrounds."

The Ikewen tastes sort of like a Pinot Noir, with bright smooth fruit and a little smokiness (volcanic soils?) that mellows with air. Really it has a personality all its own.

This has a wax capsule. Don't try to chip or peel the wax. Just go straight through with your wine opener and pull out the cork.

 100% Listan Negro. Serve cool.
