My favorite Sauvignon Blancs from the Loire have traditionally been from the villages of Sancerre, and especially, Pouilly-Fumé. No surprise there. Sancerre is probably the world's most popular white wine and is served in every hotel bar from Richmond to Tokyo. But there is a lot of really bad Sancerre in the world priced at $15/glass. The wines, like Eagles songs, are a victim of their own success.

The wines from the Côteaux Giennois are grown in similar soils right between Sancerre and Pouilly, and are sold for a fraction of the price. The name might not roll off the tongue like "Sancerre" but now the waiter won't know you're a tourist. 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Serve cold.
