This is the first Australian wine of any kind that I've bought since TWC opened. The massive, over-the-top renditions of Aussie Shiraz that became popular in the 90s and early 2000s were always, stylistically, way, way too much for my palate.
May be time to rethink that based on this beauty. Being an Aussie Shiraz (Syrah) this isn't shy or devoid of fruit. But it's just wonderfully balanced, with great texture and a ton of complexity. As is typical of Syrah, you'll find notes of black pepper, olives, flowers, plums, and blueberries. There's also a really nice espresso streak running through the wine.
If you haven't tried an Aussie red in a while, this would make for a real treat. Impressive in every way.
100% Shiraz (Syrah). Serve cool.
